Thirty years ago, on August 7-8, 1987, Lynne became the first person to swim the Bering Strait between the United States and the Soviet Union.

Her accomplishment was an athletic triumph and more. The swim opened the border between the two countries, united long-separated families, and was celebrated by Presidents Reagan and Gorbachev at the signing of the INF Missile Treaty.

Today her success is acknowledged as one of the greatest open-water swims in history and as one of the greatest examples of citizen diplomacy.
